Saturday night for Low out from Rhyl's Old Golf Road,
the banks had changed a bit whilst I've been away
so I was grateful for the silver moonlight.

Bright Silver SAM_0406

Smooth sea with the lightest of winds from behind, overhead I could hear flock after flock of unseen birds whistling to each other,
It was whiting soup with a pin a cast which got a bit boring on a 16 foot rod and as the outer blank flooded
it felt like a waste of bait so I sacked it.

Sunday morning out again for Low at Splash,
travelled light with the bass rod this time, the wind had turned and picked up a touch

used a running ledger on a plain lead for a change
First up more whiting!

I was down to my last worm, but Maestro must have smelled bass, turning up with supplies in the nick of time!

Well done Paul!

Did see the lone red tip light from the promenade and assumed it to be The Maestro.

Incredible moonrise!

Yes Mike that was me I prefer the blue tip light but I'm on a red at the moment.
The moonrise was amazing, couldn't do it justice with the camera

Hi Walski,

the sand spike was off the tackle stall at Towyn Carboot/market last Summer,
I think it was a fiver, Geoff's had some the same not so long back (about eight quid I think).

The V profile works well with a bass weight rod so long as the sand is fairly wet.
The only critiscm of it is that the white plastic bit on top ( the rod sits against it ) needs re-glueing in place regularly -or taping or you'd be bound to lose it, though it wouldn't be the end of the world.

You see other designs that are a steel rod rather than V section which I suspect would tear through the sand under leverage too easily but might be better at penetrating stoney ground?

You see other designs with a footbar to help you push it in.

I popped into Cash Converters Rhyl tonight for a look at the tackle and they had some sand spikes but can't say I was looking at them that closely.

I also have a short Fladen sand spike -basically a plastic tube with a short pivoting spike -handy pocket sized but it can't handle the leverage.

The spike is a yard long
Tip of the day: never buy anything you can make yourself for three times the cost
