Venue - Holyhead Breakwater
Tide - Low
Time - Day
Bait: Fresh Rag, Live Shrimp, Fresh Mackerel, Crab, Frozen Sandeel

Our trip on Suveran was a casualty of a strong North West wind, so Sinbad, Headwyn and myself headed to Holyhead Breakwater for some species hunting.

With the Breakwater offering great shelter from the wind, and the sun beating down, it made for a comfortable session to say the least.

Small hooks were used for the most part.

Bites were instant from the off.

In-between his 'Shipwatch' duties, Sinbad was busy with a good variety of species.

Countless Corkwings and lots of Ballans

I'd had my fair share of Corkwings as well good numbers of Ballan's.

Most fish fell to Ragworm. I was doubting the effectiveness of the Shrimp seconds before a right royal rod-bend was about to restore my faith.

I lifted into the bite and was convinced I was snagged. When the snag started taking line, I knew it was game on!

The result was a PB Ballan.

Weighed in at 3lb 9oz

Headwyn was trying all tactics to secure additional species. Mackerel, Crab and Sandeel whacked out from the end proved productive.

Pouting and Pollock added to the variety.

A couple of Doggies got his rod bending.

As a retrieval method up a 40ft wall with a sloping outer edge, all I can say is don't try this at home!!!!

In addition, we had a Mackerel baited bait trap down. This accounted for loads of small fish and the occasional Spider Crab. Frustratingly from a species point of view, today's elusive Goldsinny and Rock Cook Wrasse were accounted for in the trap.

Between us, the rods accounted for 9 species. A great result from a vanue that is rapidly becomming a favourite.

Happy Days!!!

And heres my take on the day.

I had booked 2 nights off work for an 8 hour boat trip today, but the wind meant it was cancelled last night.

Not wanting to waste the holidays, i decided to try and bump up the species count on the Breakwater today, and Mike and Sinbad decided to join me for a bit of fun.

I was fishing by 11am, having set up 2 rods in Corkwing corner hoping for some beasties for the hunt. Mike and Sinbad were already getting bites when i arrived, and we all proceeded to catch loads of small Ballans and Corkwings.

I refuse to take a photo of a Ballan under 2lb so ill have to try again another day, although Mike had a belter which i weighed at 03-09-04Lbs!

I moved up to the end to try casting a rod out, hoping for a Gurnard, but all i caught on that was a double header of Dogs and this,

which i threw back, much to the disgust of the other lads fishing off the end. Rolling Eyes

The two rods with small hooks continued to find Ballans and Corkwings, although i did manage a Sea Scorpion,

a Pollack,

and a couple of Shore Rockling,

to boost my count in the species hunt.

I put a rig into the rough ground on the outside, and was instantly rewarded with a Pout.

I then caught this on the scratching rod.

I cant decide if its a juvenile 3 Bearded or a funny coloured Shore Rockling. The 3 other Shore Rockling i caught were all dark brown with no mottling, not pink and spotty like this one!

The rods showed no sign of a Goldsinney or a Rock Cook, or a Rock Goby which i was hoping for, although i did switch up from 10s to 6s as the Corkwings were taking the size 10s too deep.

Mike and Sinbad left at tea time, and i moved to the first bend to fish the outside for a couple of hours.

Another Shore Rockling and a couple of missed bites were all i had before i put an end to a long but satisfying day, and headed to Mickey Ds at 10pm.
