Blue Sky Thinking
After Saturday morning's blank in search of a Skye Salmon on the Snizort and mindful of approaching rough weather I reckoned on a change of tack for the afternoon in what the forecast suggested would be my last chance to catch a fish of any sort on the Isle for now.
I headed North from Portree in search of pollack at a recommended spot.
Stopped for a look at Kilt Falls
mmm. do I have enough line to reach the foot of those cliffs?
A couple of miles further on I found the sign for Staffin Beach and followed it down to the breakwater from where it's a rocky yomp to the headland.
Looking at the sky it was good to have local gen that the rocks here on the North East coast of the Isle are not as slippy when wet as at Neist Point over on the west.
Considered the fly rod but left it to sulk and opted for the Blackrock Travel Spin and a Cardinal loaded with braid.
Took careful note as I crossed a gutter onto an outcrop, the tide was rising and I'd need to keep my retreat in view and move before long or be cut off until well after sun down.
Tried everything, hokkai, shrimp rig, wedge, soft lures
spot the lure!
and gave it a go on strips of the only bait I could get, "Co-op" haddock, on both float and pulley rigs.
In the end had to take comfort in a local dad 'n' lad enjoying a similar lack of success.
I checked out Uig on the way back to Portree, frankly not the most inspiring place on Skye
or maybe it was just the gloom of the approaching unfishable dark skies.
Work and weather would scotch any more attempts for the moment, even so I love Skye.
