A Thornie Situation! Empty
PostSubject: A Thornie Situation!   A Thornie Situation! EmptySun Nov 30, 2008 12:19 am

Venue - River Mersey
Duration - 4 hrs
Bait: Frozen Lug, Frozen Squid
Boat - Suveran II
Skipper - Simon Parry

I joined Mick and Rich onboard Simon Parry’s Suveran II for a trip out of Liverpool Marina on the River Mersey.
The Marina is a fantastic place to start a charter trip. With convienient car parking, toilet facilities and floating pontoons, it makes for a very civilised experience.

Onboard, the short trip to the mark barely gave us time to bait up.
Large baits were to be the order of the day. With Cod in mind, I loaded 4 worms and half a Squid onto 3/0 Pennel rigs.

It was a fresh start to the day. Luckily the sun was shining and things did warm up as the trip progressed.

The Cod were shy today but the Whiting were mad for it!
We were getting bites every drop.
All Whiting were good sized. The largest of which hit 1 1/2lb on the scales.
I had a triple header of Whiting. Quite impressive for a 2 hook Pennel

On the scenary front, it was interesting to see the new arena up close and the departure of RFA Fort George from Cammel Laird was simply spectacular!

A few Dabs were showing but the mainstay of the day was the Whiting.

Late on, I had a good knock that led to an almighty struggle.
With the river in full flow, I had something on that was taking line from my Abu 6500.
Cod on?
A good few minutes of giving and taking line and eventually a Thornback Ray broke the surface.
Duly landed, this little beauty weighed in at 7lb.

With more Whiting to follow, it was constant action.
No Cod today, but I’m happy to wait til next time for them.

A great days fishing with good company and a great setting.

Happy Days!!!

Nice thornie, and some good Whiting too.

Shame about the Cod, but never mind!

The Whiting were consistantly big.
Severel over a pound and quite a few close.

The Thornie was a surprise. Although I have to admit that I was gutted that it wasn't a Cod.

A great day out though.

Got to thank Simon for the guidance on the Lug/Squid coctails. As the Lug is threaded up, there is no need for any bait elastic, which is a bonus. farao

Your report is the best result I've seen on the net, but the skippers will no doubt give you a current update.

This looked good.

Woouldn't mind trying a boat trip sometime but dont have the gear, guess I will have to ask SWMBO if I can get some (gear that is, the answer to anything else would probably be no Very Happy )

Cool Cool most of the charter boats in the area hire the tackle out £5 or £6 including the end tackle saves you buying gear just to fish now and then Cool Cool Cool
