| Back to Shelly Beach, on a fine still warm afternoon. Arrived a bit early, only one hour incoming on a very small 2.3 m tide. Looking down from the track Looking back, the Council has repaired the steps, last time the steps were on an angle and wobbly, hard for an old timer to get down with dignity, the fishing spot is only 75m from the steps Looking back towards Shelly beach, with its big car park, boat ramp, camping and trailer park, and yet this spot does not show any evidence to have been fished. They fish from the park and I could see someone had fished at the point back at the park As soon as I saw it I said Yesssss, a very fishy spot which only added when i walked down to the water and found the sand / mud good to walk on and small cockles there. This has proved correct. First cast with a piece of Trevally, oops on the rock, pulled it back to the middle of the channel which is not deep, just follows the beach angle First bite after 30 minutes, missed it, rebait, bite straight away, A good 50cm Kahawai. Tea time, more later. |

| You just know stuff swims through that channel! Wonder what an underwater camera would reveal. _________________ we call it fishing not catching!

| Interesting spot. Looks really shallow. 50cm Kahawai - over here we would probably only get rockling and flatties. |

| There is a deeper channel the other side of the rock, search Shelly beach, kaipara harbour on google Earth+, going back a few years it shows the channel dry to the right of the rock. |
