PostSubject: Holy smokers   Holy smokers EmptySat Apr 13, 2019 8:19 pm

We arrived at Holyhead Breakwater today, parked up and noticed quite a few vehicles about and unusually the gates were open with some driving along the breakie.

google revealed that
* correction = Gordon Peggie of Rhyl and Steve Parry * had organised a charity open match, longest fish to win £250.
( vehicle access for competitors)

With the start time still a couple of hours off and running until midnight we decided against entering.

I did my usual drop down the wall with a shrimp rig tipped with bits of ragworm and sandeel.

Tina did the same until we saw a feathered mackerel landed 50 yards along.

A few casts later and she had  two Mackerel on the string and a third clearly visible as we looked down from our vantage point was either trying to connect or was on a hook but shook itself off.

Two very nice mackerel were coming home with us!

I managed a small Corkwing on the bait and came a poor second at feathering

We finished our own private match at High, 2 fish each  sort of makes a draw but to be fair Tina wins longest and heaviest fish I suppose!

Anybody on here in the actual competition?

Well done Notbad for just about keeping up with Tina although it was inevitable you'd finish 2nd lol!
I think Squidward was fishing the match along with Headwyn and Hot Shot fishing

SimonT was around too. Sorry Simon embarrased to say it was only after you'd driven further passed us that I thought it was maybe you Embarassed

Recognised a couple of vehicles from the Rhyl area.

The match had only been going an hour when we left, we'd walked on so no problem for us but the gates were locked again by then.

Yes Paul, Headwyn and I were there. An 8 hour match for the longest single fish. The match was from 4 p.m. till midnight, but not run by Holyhead club It was a fundraiser for motor neurone disease, organised by Gordon Peggie from Rhyl and Steven Parry, who is a M.N.D. sufferer. I`m not sure how many attended but it was well over 150 anglers. There wasn`t a lot happening in the daylight apart from frostbite ( which got a lot worse after dark ) There were quite a few dogfish and whiting coming out along the match length, lots more in the dark. I was fortunate enough to find a 90 cm. conger in the daylight, which put me in the lead for a few hours, but towards the end of the match a couple of bigger huss were caught 102 cm. and 98 cm., still 3rd place wasn`t too bad £75 and a litre of whisky.
There were loads of donated prizes in the raffle from tackle shops and manufacturers as well as friends and members of Shore huggers u.k.and other facebook pages. I believe the total sum raised was close to £3.000.
