The last time I got over to fish The Fens for Pike with my brother Pete, the weather had other ideas and The Beast from The East froze many of the drains and made it a fruitless and very cold trip.
This week's session was to be preceeded by the warmest February on record and with the reports of Pike stealing fewer match catches than of late and the bait fish shoals dispersing it seemed like we might have left it too near the close season as the Pike might have other things on their minds.
Nevertheless Monday morning had us casting lures into a chill Fenland wind with optimism and a plan to roam in search of predator action
After a couple of hours we tried this bridge, the features scream Pike but I've never had any luck here, first cast and my lure
landed on the island of the first buttress and I feared it would snag on the vegetation but it came free and plopped into the water right by the brickwork and as it did so a big swirl on the water suggested a surprised Pike was about!
It took me three casts to get the length right and drop the lure "on its head" and this time it was game on!
With the adrenalin running and optimism renewed we got back to casting
Three casts later I'm giving it the "sink and draw" and watching the soft jointed
silver lure 12 feet from my rod tip as it sank, when suddenly a surge of colour rocketted from the depths and snatched it and I was attached to a second Pike at very close quarters
Two very similar Pike and we had to check all the photos carefully later to be sure they weren't the same one.
Deciding to rest this spot we spent the rest of the day trying other spots without a take before returning to the bridge again at sunset.
There were to be no more takes, I'd have loved to see bruv get one as well but I'm well pleased with my two
I really must fish more Mondays!
