Makins Fishery, 9 March 2012
After a sleepless night of anticipation I was up at silly o'clock for a rendezvous near Junction 2 of the M6 this morning; glad all I needed to get ready was my flask, butties and one-day rod licence, because my coarse fishing brother was providing the gear.
It was worth being up just to see the fabulous moon sky scape!
6.45 and we were waiting excitedly for the 7am unlocking of Makins Fishery near Wolvey.
An early lead for Peter with a carp on the feeder rod.
Good banter and sibling rivalry had us switching back and forth between feeder rods and poles
This is the first bream I've caught in decades!
The bait store was sweetcorn, pellets, additives, mini boilies, maggotts, pinkies, caster, hemp, spicy meat cubes and some red gel stuff.
We weren't seeing many carp on the hair rigged sweetcorn feeder set ups but the little Roach were loving pinkie on the pole gear
-we must of had about a hundred of them, it was a bite a chuck all day long.
The lack of big fish didn't really matter but then suddenly as the sun began to sink
and we faced packing all the gear away, it all kicked off!
A personal best Perch for me took a double pinky on the pole from beneath a tree,
where caster had been trickle fed all day in anticipation of the big uns patrolling the margins
reliably weighed at two and a half pounds.
No sooner was it back in the water when the feeder rod jumped from its rest,
a Mirror Carp weighed at four and a half pounds fancied the sweetcorn - another personal best !
Then it was back to the pole beneath the tree for my third record today, an eight and a half pound Ghost Koi !
On the light elastic set up intended for small Roach it took a good few minutes to bring to the net.
But Pete wasn't outshone, he had his own lengthy tussle to bring in a nine and a half pound Mirror
And all on size 18 barbless hooks and 4lb line!
A perfect end to a perfect day, and It's true, a carp days fishing beats a Friday at work!
Now where's that tide table?
