A Canterbury mud fish from the Canterbury plains (district) in the lower South Island of New Zealand.
They live in weedy slow moving streams and in droughts bury themselves in the mud. They swim and act like an eel, up to about 4 inches.
It did not put up much of a fight!

Well done MusselMan you know more about them than I do.

I was in the South Island for a Farm Forestry conference early April, a field trip to a farm where they were fencing off and planting native trees along streams to protect the habitat of mudfish.

Ah, even an idiot can appear to be knowledgeable these days.

Having googled the mountain ( Embarassed ) and seeing the location, I now have an advertising jingle from the 1990's stuck in my head.

"D'ya go to Timaru?"

Bugging me I can't remember which company that was. Was that an airline? Air NZ perhaps??

I have been to Timaru, but just following State Highway 1 down en route to Dunedin. Don't remember Timaru but I do remember when we got to Dunedin because everywhere was shut. Holiday - celebrating the city being something like 150 years old.

when were you down that way? I cannot find anything about the ad, Typical NZ shut when you get there!
When we arrived 1973, everything shut at the weekend, we were lucky to find a cafe open in Auckland.

Around 1998. Still have a few memories of the trip.

The advert was on all the time. I also have a memory of being stuck in a hotel in Greymouth as a cyclone blew through. The TV had four channels. 1 showed rugby 2 showed rugby and 3 also showed rugby. The fourth channel was trying to put on some alternative for those not wanting to watch rugby, so was showing netball!

Must have been around 1st April because there was a great gag on the radio. The presenter was saying thank you to the population of south island for agreeing to have rolling power blackouts so that north island could keep their lights on. The phone line was full of irate callers!
