| Venue - Llandudno Pier Tide - Low to High Time - Night Bait: Fresh Lug, Fresh Mackerel
Forget some over-priced, over-crowded and under-rated Gastro Pub for this years Christmas do. Why not hire Llandudno Pier and save on the hangover cures whilst giving yourself a chance of a fish or 2.
With the addition of Mince Pies to the usual fishing equipment, we made our way down the Pier.
With tonights full moon at it’s Perigee, factors had coincided to mean that the moon was going to be the largest visable since 1993 and not to be exceeded until 2016. Quite a spectacle was promised!
Del the Tope setup in his usual spot at the back of the bar. Al and James sought shelter from the strong southerly by the gents. Myself and Simon braved the conditions shore side of the bar.
The wind was strong and the rain was persistant. Clouds were obscuring our spectacle.
Having used a bait trap here previously, resulting in several monster edibles, I had decided to expand the idea. Armed with 5 traps, I was hopeful that Llandudno Crab Cakes would be on the menu tomorrow.
The traps were baited with a combination of Rainbow and Brown Trout as well as Mackerel.(thanks to Rick for giving me the out of date, freezer burnt Trout). Down they went at random points spread out around the end of the Pier.
Finally, it was time to get the rods out
Simon had been rig-building today. He kindly donated a few homemade Wishbones to me.
With both hooks firmly planted on the bottom, it proved to be a killer rig. (in Simons hands) Still recovering from the exertion of arriving at a venue overladen with Mince Pies, Bait Traps and 10lb of lead weight, I was more interested in gathering my breath whilst having a nice cup of coffee than checking the rods.
Still the clouds persisted. No sign of the moon yet.
Simon was into the Whiting. He had landed 6 before I noticed a knock on my rod.
James was doing well too with 2 Whiting on a Pennel rig.
This continued…. James was giving his Dad, Al a masterclass tonight.
There were no monsters about though. Del confirmed this!
Simon had a good steady session. He ended up with 10 Whiting, 4 Dabs and 2 Poor Cod. I had 6 Whiting on the rods.
The night was progressing and the time had now come to retrieve the traps. With great anticipation each one was lifted……………….
The result……………………..
1 Prawn!!!!!!!!!!
Not quite the full story, there were loads of Velvet Swimmers, loads of immature Edibles and a couple of Poor Cod but the only thing that was legally insize was my mate ‘Tony the Prawn’ We exchanged phone numbers and said our goodbyes as Tony was returned to the sea.
Meanwhile, Al had done well with lots of Whiting but James confirmed his position as tonights top angler.
I spent the best part of an hour packing away the rods and nets. You have to try these things, but I will be travelling lighter next time I fish here.
Back in the car park, the lads fishing the wall reported Whiting and a few small Codling.
All in all, it was a great night. We had no sight of the moon tonight so I’ve booked the Pier for November 14th 2016. No hangover as I write this
Happy Days!!! |

| I had to look that one up!
Perigee: The position in a geocentric orbit at which the orbiting object is at its least distance from Earth. www.astunit.com/tutorials/glossary.htm
Great result young James! |
