After working in Bonnie Scotland since last August I finally made it back to the Lake District a couple of weeks ago
and on Monday I managed to get down the beach for a session over low water
Drigg beach is a huge surf beach and is reputed to be one of the best Bass beaches in the country so naturally I took flatty gear
Only having the one pack of frozen Lug with me it wasn't going to be a long session but that was fine as it was already 8pm and after all it was a school night
On the ebb nothing was happening at all but as soon as the flood started the bites came on
And for the next three casts all I got was bites apart from one small Dab which managed to unhook himself just as he got to the edge of the surf and was able to scurry back into the wet stuff before I could get my hands on him
What with the escapee a dreaded blank was on the cards and the next two casts proved fruitless despite some decent bites
Lug levels were getting low and I was getting desperate (good job my Lug packs contain 12 ).
With just one worm left in the paper another good rattle came then stopped then came again and stopped then.... nothing
It had gone completely dead
I left it for a minute or so as I had with all the other bites before winding in hoping to feel a bit of extra weight but it was hopeless, there was nothing on
Or so I thought because after 15 maybe 20 turns of the handle there it was the unmistakable thump of fish on
What ever it is I thought must have been swimming in towards me
Unless it was
WEED As I continued to wind in my mind was a mess (no comments thank you) was this dead weight a fish or weed
The white under belly that came into view brought with it a flush of excited relief for me, again no comments thank you
Happy days fish on
And more importantly
INAs I walked up to it the question was what is it, a Flounder or a good size Dab
Just as I reached the fish it flicked it's self over to reveal some lovely red spots
Thats right a Flounder with Measles
Either that or a Plaice
I'm going with Plaice
I hooked up my last sorry looking worm and launched it into the surf hoping for another hit but sadly nothing came
By now it had well gone 9 and the light was fading fast besides which I hadn't had my tea yet so it was definitely time to go
Can you guess what was for tea
It was a chicken Korma
The Plaice went back for another day
