Me and my mate Greg headed down on the 2 hour trip to Pwllheli on Saturday and we met up with a few lads from North Wales on Pwllheli's South Beach.
The weather was perfect with a very slight breeze blowing behind us. My target for the day was garfish and black bream which would both be a new species for me having never caught them !
After some lovely fish & chips we set up and cast out into the incoming tide. The fishing would prove to be very sporadic and it was more about quality rather than quantity with big gaps in the rod bending. I had set up first for garfish with thin strips of mackerel and on the 3rd cast I had a big slack liner which resulted in a brace of garfish. Much fun on the conti set up !!
This pair would be the only ones caught down the beach that night !
Beautifully wierd looking fish, and although they are long their weight is deceiving and although I thought it looked more the biggest was only 8oz !
Greg then brought in a new species for him, a lovely looking Dragonet !
The bream had started feeding with a few anglers taking them in 2's up and down the beach, but with long gaps between the catches. I was starting to wonder whether or not it would be my day, but my grauvell vertix lurched over as a brace went for the squid strips bait !
They really are a beautiful fish and they gave a good scrap, I ended up with 1 more lone bream of 8oz
Greg also got into the Bream action with this brace of fish.
It went a bit quiet then with just a small tub gurnard taking the squid bait and then after about an hour my rod nodded then nearly got yanked off the tripod ! Something had grabbed the bait and ran ! I was positive it was a bass and it was giving me one hell of a fight on the conti rod, it was only when it was coming up the surf one of my mates shouted it was a doggie! To say I was disappointed was a bit of an understatement but when it was beached it was much too big to be a dog ! It was a new PB of 9lb 5oz Bull Huss and she had taken a tiny strip of squid on a size 1 hook aimed at the mini species !
The fishing died off after that with just 1 or 2 more bream being caught down the beach. It was a fantastic day out and a place I will definitely be visiting again
