Hi all, I did a few jobs on a blokes motor on weekend and ended up with a 6500 ct mag in Mint condition as payment Neutral . My question is what are they like as I've never used a multiplier before Embarassed
Is it worth keeping and trying to use or flog it and get myself a nice egg beater Question

Never used one myself i like the egg beaters/coffee grinders call them what you will i prefer to just get on and fish instead of messing about with tangles every few casts.
You will get the elite tackle tarts telling you how multipliers are for real fishermen and how they can cast further and all that and in the right hands of course they can but whats the point when the fish are usually close in ?!

Ive fished along with plenty of lads who swear by their multipliers but im able to out cast most after i had some casting tuition and while their getting frustated with birds nests im busy getting on with the business of catching fish Very Happy so there lol!

So i would flog it and get a decent fixed (no messing about trouble free )spool reel but thats just my opinion geek

My opinion is its horses for courses I use abu multipliers for distance fishing and use multipliers for my bass rods up to 80 yards but for my mackerel fishing I use A fixed spool reel with A daiwa sand storm 13ft rod and with that set up I can put mackerel feathers or A rig A very long way and its easy to use; as logger says there is nothing wrong with A good fixed spool reel in my opinion if the rod you have will take A multiplier reel then try it if you are not used to one it can be hard to use one the abu reel you have is A very good one and I am sure you will have no problem selling it or if you wish trade it for A GOOD MAKE of fixed spool reel not one of the cheap crappy ones there are some crackers around now and in the right hands can + do cast as far as multipliers the choice is your own preference Wink

Thanks for your replys guys. I fink my mind is made up now to get rid and get myself a nice fixed spool as all I have at the mo is my Odessa bass rod and decent freeliner reel which isn't really suited to my winter fishing marks. Thanks again guys much appreciated.

Trouble with fixed spool reels is that. unless you get an expencive f/s rod or a hand built one. there arnt many of the shelf decent f/s rods out there.

Keep the reel they are great, maybe one of the lads will take you out and show you the ropes. The only fixed spool i use is for spinning. Smile Smile. As said start with the brake blocks on and the magnets set on high then as you progress get rid of the brake blocks and ease off the magnets.

Thanks for all the info guys. Weather permiting, I might go to a field on the weekend and have a few chucks with it, see how I get on. The only real niggle is that I have to lay the line on by thumb which might take abit of practice but hey nothing ventured Exclamation

Thanks again for taking the time to reply Wink

The old blend EP (Extreme pressure gear oils) had an additive that gave it a strong smell, the modern LS (Limited slip) oils don't use the same additive package so the don't have that strong smell. The other danger with the standard EP oils is that the additive can damage yellow metals e.g brass, sintered bronze, phosphor bronze etc so if you have any equipment that may have those components in ( fishing reels included) unless recommended by the manufacturer you shouldn't use them. All EP oils have a GL rating, anything with a GL4 or GL5 is not recommended for those applications.

Learn something new every day lol!
