Our club regularly hold league matches at Pen.
We have had some gruellers, but these have been outweighed by the gooduns!
We tend to fish it over low on bigger tides as this means you can cast into a channel at low water, but you have to move back at a good pace as the tide starts to flood over the flat sand.
It can also be fished off the shingle at high water, but results usually arent as good as over low.
Our matches are fished in the area of the yacht club, although there is access to the beach via a footbridge near the little chef on the A55, and you can also fish in the rougher ground near the headlands at either end of the beach.
Notable matches include one fished in February a few years ago, when around 10 Thornback Rays were caught. The biggest was a shade under 10lb, although a bigger one was caught by an angler who wasnt fishing the match!
These were caught over the top of the tide off the beach near the yacht club, but as we have found in the years since, if the rays dont make an appearence, you are left struggling for pin Whiting and Rockling.
Summer sees a lot of holiday makers using the beach, so we tend to keep away at this time of year, although there are Bass, Flounders and Eels present. Try pumping lug while you fish and using it fresh for the Bass.
Autumn brings the Dogs. This is the time of year we have a summer league match here, and you need 20 to 30 fish to be in contention!!!
Good fun, but not everyones cup of tea.
The Whiting replace the Dogs when the water temperature drops, and there is always the chance of a Codling or 2 fishing this close to the Straits, especially if there is an onshore blow.
One more fish to mention has to be a 16lb plus Conger that won one of our matches down here a few years ago. Fishing in the rough ground to the west of the beach, the angler had hooked a Whiting, which was taken by the Conger. He did very well to get it in on a size 2 hook!!!
Hope this helps.
