I saw a guy using a running ledger, with a polystyrene pop up two inches from the hook, and secondary small weight 18'' from the hook.
This took his bait 18'' off the bottom,(away from the crabs)He got into small bass instead of crabs.
I believe spider crabs congregate around now to breed,I don't know if all the crabs do the same thing, but it might be handy using pop ups.
I fished a beach in Whyalla south Australia,in the breeding season, when the waves lapped back, all you could see was crabs with their pinchers up for hundreds of yards.(big red crabs the Aussies call bluey's)
(not a time to put your own tackle into the water) lol!
