I caught my first ever Smooth-Hound yesterday, and what a beautiful fish it is

Just after the better half took the photo, I could have sworn it barked. it was one of those moments you think, did that really happen.

So what I'd really like to know, can dogfish really bark, or is it me that's barking mad?

I can't say ive ever heard one bark but sharks, especially the huss, will force air through their gills and it sounds like a deep grunt

Ah, maybe that's what it was, and I just interpreted that as a bark.

Thanks Simon At least I now know I'm not losing the plot completely.

Maybe your hand on the belly pushed air out of its swim bladder so possibly a belch? Did it smell fishy?

Gurnard are believed to grunt to communicate with each other. Gurnard comes from the French word grognement which means to grunt!

Not sure about it smelling fishy, I try not to get my nose too close to something that has sharp teeth.  Smile

Wonder if I'm related to a Gurnard, I usually communicate with the Misses by grunting.  queen

Smoothounds dont have sharp teeth. They have crushing pads similar to Rays.

I love this site, it's so educational.     study

That's three things I've learned, that I didn't know last week.  Dogfish don't bark, Smooth-Hounds don't have sharp teeth, and Gurnard grunt.

No teeth but they can crush a crab with them there pads so unless you want flat fingers I would keep away from them. Sad scratch study
