That's the American crayfish with the red claws. They have been in there a while to get that big.
Apparently, the rules say you have to kill them, and definately not put them back in.
Fished a canal in Watford a few years ago,it was so bad you couldn't fish on the canal bed without catching one.
There's a few foreign species, some of them undercut the banks and the banks collapse.
You have to get permission off the enviroment agency to drop baited nets in to get rid of them.
The original british species are protected.
Pike scoff 'em I believe.
It's not permitted to use them as bait.

Good bit of searching there Dave,I knew you needed permission to net them, but I thought the number of nets
were a lot less.

Had a Taxidermist that lived a few doors away when I was a Kid,when he got older he gave me 6 built cane fishing rods.(wish I had them now)
He gave me a red fox with it's foot on a stoat in a glass case,I took it to school,it's probably still there in the rural science lab.

I think there is two types in the bullshead because
some have one big red claw and some have two big
brown claws I caught another 3 yesterday.

Sounds like they are adjusting to the enviroment Steve,I think they all start off with 2 claws, probably lost the other claw to the pike. lol!

Stevo and Cole, have you tried eating them, I don't know what rules there are on the fishery, in NZ they fish for our native fresh water crays with a piece of meat on a string and flick them on the bank. You could use a lobster pot or similar. The owners of the fishery may be glad to get rid of some of them, ask first.

I have eaten them Rhod and I believe there nice with bacon
but the rules say we can't put traps down for them but we must
kill them if caught scratch

I think if the Bullshead club applies for permission off the EA Steve, you could probably net them and clear the water.
The nets are like shrimp nets, with para cord tied to the bank.Just bait the nets up and throw them in.
I watched a vid of two guys doing it with 5 nets spaced out along the bank.By the time they had thrown in the last net,and went back to the first one, they had a net full. lol!

I've fished there,Glossop brook, and where the brook joins the Etherow. Some nice brownies and chub in it.
It's not bad further downstream past the Melandra castle at the back of Gamesley. Some nice looking spots at Charlesworth viaduct.
Glossop brook is fishable right from the park in Glossop, and in the town centre where it goes under the market square and down past Glossop caravans.
