Off the bricks Empty
PostSubject: Off the bricks   Off the bricks EmptySun Jan 29, 2017 4:42 am

Last wednesday I decided to try a spot on the east coast at Orewa beach, there is a headland at the northern end, with a line of gently inclined strata with flat rocks up to a small cave you can cross at low tide. It is only a few hundred yards to the car park, but of course the shallowest end is at the beach, so access is only a couple of hours after high, and with the cave, nowhere to go at high tide.
I was after anything that swam, but had a kingfish in mind so took livebaiting gear. I chucked a piece of fish bait out but only small 6in snapper. I started near the cave the deepest spot across a weedbed, hoping to catch something small for a bait, but nothing doing apart from tiny fish, so I moved towards the beach a bit before low tide, only 4 feet of water, shallowing towards the beach, but straight down onto sand. I put a bit of ground bait out and soon had some 4 to 6 inch Kahawai, one of which went out under a balloon with a hook in its shoulder, swimming out a few yards. I was talking to a young couple walking on the rocks when 2 kingfish flashed past under our feet towards the beach, I quickly pulled the livie in to the rocks as the kingfish came back, it stopped, inhaled the livie and when I set the hook it took off along the rocks to the weedbed ripping 25 m of line from the reel, I managed to wrestle it out of the weeds and back to where I was, and the young man netted it for me. It was the larger of the two that I caught as I do not think the other would have made the legal limit of 75cm. I stayed another hour or so, but did not see any more fish.

I forgot to take any pictures of the place, next time.
There are plenty of places such as that one with the odd kingfish passing, but it is usualy all or nothing, and not many people bother trying.
It is good when a plan works.I will have to wait to smoke the fillets until our drought and total fire ban finish.
