Venue - Kinmel Bay
Tide - Low
Time - Day
Bait: Peeler Crab, Shrimp, Fresh Lug

It's become an annual event heading down beyond the end Perch in Kinmel Bay on the big tides in search of a Smoothound.

Previous years attempts had resulted in nothing but the odd Rockling.

Confidence was high as usual. Although a massive tide and the addition of the the Smoothound's killer bait meant that today was going to be the day!!!!!!

Crab is well known as a good bait for the species. However, Live Shrimp is said to drive them wild!!!!

Time will tell!!!!!

An early start and the long walk out to the mark threw up an interesting sight.

Something caught my eye in one of the gullies.

On closer inspection, it moved!

Surely Not? Img_9545

A Seal Pup had forgotten that the tide goes out!!

Surely Not? Img_9548

He seemed healthy so I left him be.
He did eventually find the low water mark and disappeared from view.

At the mark, time to setup and bait up.
A 'Wormy Special' Pully Pennel rig was loaded with a Crab and Shrimp Coctail. A 4oz plain lead was enough to get it out there.

Notbad was out too.
Fishing 2 rods. One with Crab and Shrimp and his lighter gear with a single Fresh Lug.

Surely Not? Img_9563

Cast out, the waiting began.

Surely Not? Img_9568

Not for long!
A micro-flattie managed to get its mouth onto a 3/0 Lugworm offering Smile

Surely Not? Img_9564

Simon joined us.

Surely Not? Img_9566

Low tide was upon us and Notbad's flattie was the only action to speak of.

Surely Not? Img_9556

Having rebaited a couple of times, I eventually registered a knock!

A Doggie saved the blank for me.

Surely Not? Img_9579

Next cast, I was having a chat with Notbad when he shouts 'Rod'!
I turned to see an almighty bend on my Fladen Beachcaster.
A quick check to see if a Seagull had snagged on the line followed by a bit of a sprint to to get into the action.

Fish definately on!
Slack line followed by line being taken confirmed that this was no Rockling.
I caught sight of both my leader and also a grey dorsal fin.
In he came and boy was I a happy chappie!

Surely Not? Img_9577

My first Smoothound from the shore.

Surely Not? Img_9578

Time to call it a day for another year.
I will be checking the tidetables and making a date next year for the annual pilgrimage.

Happy Days!!!

Shore caught smoothie: Priceless.

Some things money can't buy. Cool

After nipping home for breakfast I switched to Horton’s Nose for High

Surely Not? Buillobaise2003

Had a visit from a bloke with a huge grin on his face, I don’t know who he was but he was boring his kids senseless, repeating the story about how he’d caught a 6lb + smoothie off the shore that morning Razz

After tea I moved venue to Prestatyn,
Surely Not? Buillobaise2008

Chanced upon Wayne, he’d heard a rumour some guy had caught a 10lb hound at Kinmel Bay that morning

It’ll be a proper shark next! - here's hoping -Good Luck on Friday chaps, I hope to read a report of another jaw dropping catch!

( Let me know when it’s safe to go back in the water ) affraid

Thanks for all the replies.

I feel a bit guilty that my Smoothie has taken the limelight from Notbads Flounder.

Not been on for a while, well done Mike ("I love it when a plan comes together", Hannibal Smith, "A Team") Bet it took a few days for the grin to disappear. See you didn't get a chance at the Porgies, still always another day.
