I`ve just read the report of last night`s club match that I missed on North Shore, wall to wall whiting as usual with a couple of doggies and this 9-13-00 specimen for dave.

What a lovely ray. I've not had one along the N Wales coast since moving here. Do many come out along the Kimnel bay-Rhyl-Prestatyn-Talacre coastline? I don't hear of any.

They`re like rocking horse droppings along the shallow beaches, but Tan-lan Colwyn Bay, Llandudno north shore, Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan can all turn up a few decent ones occasionally.
There seem to be plenty caught from the boats off Prestatyn and Rhyl, but not closer inshore.

Many thanks squidward, talkingbullhuss and headwyn. I thought that might well be the case. I've heard of a few towards deeside/Liverpool way, I wouldve thought the eustary is more to their liking.

By the sounds of it, you got to find the buggers first! Lol!

Pulley rigs, up and over rigs, rigs with long snoods are best for rays, or else when they cloak the bait, they hit the lead (especially if its a gripped sinker) thornbacks eat mainly lug/rag/crab/sandeels but despite the widespread use of mackerel/bluey/fish baits, thornbacks don't have a massive appetite for fish, although other rays do eat a significant proportion of fish. Research has shown that Thornies eat a large number of shrimps/prawns/worms/crustaceans over fish baits.

That's a cracking Ray  !! I spoke to Dave and he said it was quite a distance out and took a while to reel in !

As for hunting Rays, the mersey is full of them all sorts of sizes. I only fished for them a couple of times last year but caught about 4 ranging from 3lb to 5lb.
Perch Rock at low tide from wirral side and Mariner's wharf at high tide on the liverpool side.
Rigs, Pulley rigs with a 3-4' trace length, drop down pulley rigs, or up and over rigs.
Bait, Squid and sandeel wraps, squid and bluey/Mack wraps should do it for you.

Good luck Logger Wink
