PostSubject: Man Flu   Sun Jan 10, 2016 5:39 pm

Despite suffering the worst cold that's ever been known to mankind I somehow managed to drag myself out for a therapeutic fishing session last night from the harbour wall at Whitehaven  fishing

I made a quick call into Tesco for some essential supplies to see me through the week, beer crisps Choccy bars beer and some Sardines from the fish counter for bait  fish
I had a bag of twenty for £1  Very Happy
As soon as I got out of the shop the rain started to fall and continued to do so for the entire session steadily getting heavier  Sad

Never mind I thought whats a drop of pneumonia when there's fishing to be done  fishing
At the end of the harbour wall is an old lighthouse which has a gantry running around it about 15ft up so this offered some shelter and kept me out of the worst of the elements  Smile
To start off I had Blow lug on one hook and Limpets on the other which I had collected the day before and unsurprisingly both these baits attracted Whiting from the very first cast but I have to say the Limpets were the better bait of the two as the Whiting seemed to go mad for them but quite often left the lug alone plus their so tough they aren't easily pulled of the hook like the soft worms can be so I had some real good rattles on the rod tip  Cool

Once these were used up and I'd had my fill of Whiting I switched to the Sardines using a whole fillet on each hook hoping to catch something bigger such as a Codling or Dogfish.
I had some initial success with the bigger baits and caught my target species, one Codling although only slightly larger than the Whiting and two Dogfish but in the end the Whiting with their insatiable appetite were getting to the baits and on the hooks so quickly that nothing else had a chance  ice

Still a great session though even with the monsoon  Exclamation
Sorry the pics arnt great but my phone kept getting wet and wouldn't work so I had to take what I could get  Very Happy

bye

Be careful pal, I caught a heavy cold, did a beach session in the bitter cold and contracted double pneumonia (embarrassing for a nurse/paramedic!) Took me 4wks before I could breathe properly or walk 10yrds without having severe shortness of breath. It was hell!

You caught on limpets? Rock or slipper limpets? I've never had a thing on rock limpets, despite often trying them as baits/cocktails when I was younger to eke out my 10 lugworm (all I could afford!!) I'd like to think they would work, it would slash my bait expenditure overnight! (Bait pump in the shed)

A bag of twenty beers for a quid?  No wonder you are ill.

Liking the sound of limpets for bait though

They were the Patella vulgata type or common Limpet (I think) the usual ones we find on our beaches Very Happy
I dried them out on news paper over night in an attempt to make them appear/smell less fresh and more like the fish might find them after a storm Exclamation
The beaches up here are mostly storm beaches and there littered with limpet shells which is what gave me the idea when I was struggling to find any lug Cool

I think/hope I'll survive the cold which isn't really that bad (man flu) after 4 years in the infantry (Welsh Guards) and 25 years (can't believe it's been that long) working in the forests usually up some god forsaken mountain in all weather's I think I've become immune Laughing
I haven't got to the level of Talkingbullhuss yet but I'm getting there lol!

I think it was Frank Sinatra who said;
