Seascale Cumbria
High water
Frozen Lug
19.00 - 21.00With no wind and no rain for once I thought I'd give it a go over high water which was at 8pm
It was a very small sea with no movement at all apart from a feeble lapping on the shore as the tide crept up the beach
I was fishing on the left of the jetty where I would be casting onto the edge of some rough ground and where I've had some success before
My hope was avoid the Whiting (not easy) and catch something for the species's hunt
After almost an hour and a half of baits coming back in untouched I was praying for a Pin Whiting
For the last half hour I decided a move was probably a good idea although I was thinking I'm wasting my time, the sea here is shallow enough on a big tide let alone a small one that would make a mill pond look choppy
I remembered that a couple of hundred yards to the right of the jetty and half way down the beach some gullys had formed just before Christmas and with the small tide a good cast might just get me into one, if they were still there
Five minutes past.... nothing... ten minutes went without the slightest knock even though I'd scaled down my hooks and baits to size tiny
I was convinced that I was wasting precious bait that I could be using in the deeper waters of Whitehaven where I'm planning on visiting this weekend
As I was looking back towards the village and smelling the odour of fish and chips which was wafting my way on the night air I caught a slight flicker of light in the corner of my eye
I looked around at the tip light which was motionless
I thought that's it pack up then there was the slightest vibration.... then a rattle.... then a very definate series of knocks, smile time

After almost two hours I had my prize
A Pin Whiting and a Codling
With renewed zeel I rebaited and cast back to where I imagined the gullies to be and within five minutes I was rewarded with a slightly bigger Codling
But just as it was getting good it was time to go
After all I do need my beauty sleep

Happiness is
