PostSubject: Species hunting. 20/10/15.   Wed Oct 21, 2015 12:56 am

Dan, Terry and I took a trip today to see what we could add to our species tallys.

As I was lagging behind, I had plenty of targets, as did Terry but Dan was on a mission for a Black Goby and a Smelt, which had both been caught from here over the weekend by one of the other chaps doing the species hunt hes in.

We arrived three hours before high, and things were slow to get started, with a few small Corkwings and some tiny Poor Cod .

Terry had a move and picked up more Corkwings and a few Rock Gobies before Dan decided to go for a wander.

I managed to add a Long Spined Sea Scorpion,

And a few Goldsinneys before Terry and Dan both caught small Gurnard so I set up a baited shrimp rig and sent it out.

A couple of other anglers turned up, who had been having a bad time on the breakwater, but didn’t stay too long. They had some small Wrasse and a Pollack, and Terry had a Pollack and some Whiting.

Eventually, I found a Grey Gurnard on the shrimps, but couldn’t find a Rock Goby or Smelt down the side.

Dan, phoned, to say he had had a Sand Goby, and I drove round to see him just as he was landing a massive Black Goby! Probably some sort of record but he threw it back, but species 45 for the year!

He than came back and joined us as it started to go dark, and promptly started pulling out Rock Gobies, which I still couldn’t catch. He then added a Smelt for number 46, and I couldn’t catch one of them either. I was being plagued by tiny Poor Cod, but did manage to add a Pouting between them.

Terry was also now catching Smelt for fun, and had some Mackeral too, along with lots of Poor Cod and small Whiting.

All in all, it was a steady day, with at least 13 species between us. Dan added 3, Terry added 2 and I added 5.

We have got a plan for Thursday night if the weather sorts itself out so fingers crossed.

Happy Days!
