Right, so after pumping 40 prime lug to fish the next tide (giving the blown and broken worms to my son to use as bait - told to keep them seperate from live worms on pain of death!) both boys are begging to go fishing. so i look at the tide table and decide to fish the 2hrs up and 2hrs down with high approx 2pm (very roughly!!) we headed down to the north wales bowls centre to give it a go and found a raging surf pounding in with some flatter tables within casting distance. so i set up my shakespeare agility mx surf 12ft 9" beach rods and abu 6500 hi speed multis with 2hook paternosters. when i went to get several "prime" lug to bait up with and found a slimy mess. yes, my son had dumped his worm bits in my tray of lug in sand and fresh seawater thus killing the lot... deep breaths matt, flatties will still eat it... so i cast both rods out and set them in the rest. paying out line to allow the 6oz grippers the chance to grip. both boys are now begging to have their rods set up, so one son gets a powerplay 11ft6" bass rod and shimano 6010 baitrunner to single paternoster clipped down and a big bunch of lug, the other son got a 12ft penn seastreak beach caster with a light tip to leeda riptide 5500 sized multi again with a fixed clipped paternoster and loadsa lug. both had 4oz grippers. whilst sorting the kit out last night, the darling wife was saying that i only let my youngest son fish (which is true - as he has never asked to have a go or shown any interest in fishing, yet told mummy its boring as i dont take 4(!!) rods so he can have a go, or let him use one of mine. so i was armed with gear for him as well, even though he usually ends up running up and down waving his arms in the air and shouting "the waters coming in, abandon ship!" as he did today) both begged to watch my rods as i set up their rods, remembering my gorgeous wife's sage advice, i allowed them to use and look after my gear. i cast both boys rods out and noticed that they were both jumping and shouting by the spume and spray by the waters edge - not conducive for a stealthy shore sniper like me! I then notice that my rods have fallen over unoticed by the kids of course!! I jog over to find the rods have been washed out to sea by the undertow and by some miracle have washed up on the edge of the stone groyne!! I got them undamaged (i know!!) and retreive both rigs. after lecturing the children on the importance of taking care of the gear, they both reply they saw them fall over and wash away... argh!! They go and watch their rods as i rebait and recast. the tripod again blows over in the wind, shattering one of the intermediate rings! Argh argh!! The mainline was shredded so that needs replacing too... i decide that i will call it a day soon, go to recast and a rouge wave comes past me, hits the wall behind me (im wading by the railings/ramp) and rebounds straight down my back and legs... f#@*ing lovely!! I go back to my rods to find my multis jammed with sand another ball of weed up each line and both children soaked through as they had been running into the waves. needless to say, nothing caught this time out, now i know why low water is better at the bowls centre. i reckon as the sea fines down after this blow, it could fish very well maybe the bass might appear? Now ive got a new insert for the eye and just need to alraldite it in, oh yeah, also clean and respool my multis and pump some new fresh live bait - as well as teach the son why we dont put dying worms with live ones, next time i go to the bowls centre i might strike lucky, not get bowled over by strong winds!

Im sat at home planning my next bait digging trip and fishing session... hey it cant get much worse can it?? Alcohol is unavailable at the moment as the "darling" wife (she of -take both kids fishing, fame!) is nursing the sick at work. why did i have kids? Free organs on tap? Anyway its not like i had to do much, few hours of begging, 8seconds work and 9months later here they appear!

That's a great report. If you have many more days like that yourself & (Tim) talking bullhuss, could start writing a book

I might just start out with articles, love to be a sea fishing journalist! Am already a published carp fishing journalist for the now defunct "big carp" (BC) magazine in the 90s. love writing about fishing regardless on how i get on.

I cant say i blame you mate. i have often followed my gut instinct when fishing. as john darling wrote in "bass fishing on shore and sea" about the "psychological moment" when he felt it was the best time during a session when to attach their best crab bait and cast out - often resulting in a good bass. i have often set up and not "felt it" and therefore packed up early as i can almost "feel" a blank coming on. yet there have been other times, ive had "that feeling" saying i need to get down the shore as a decent result is on the cards. my PB bass was caught after a long excercise with the army. i was completely exhausted after several weeks of lots of running shouting and sleeping in ditches (which always seemed pointless after afghan!) i was asleep on my poxy issue bed (i was living in Tidworth, nr Salisbury wiltshire, my family were in dyserth) fast asleep when i got the strongest urge to get down the beach (which was in southampton docks approx 1 1/2-2hrs away! So i leapt in the car and off i went. picking up some rag on the way. the session was fished into dark and i caught the usual schoolies, soles, rays, smoothies and a gizillion pout. at about 2100hrs in full dark, i decided to freeline a pout in the docks margins amongst the boulders - not something id ever tried before. within 25mins the pout had died but i left it floating in the margins, bouncing off the rocks in the tide. i heard a sucking sound just like a carp slurping bread, and the ratchet on my multi whirred, i struck on my lil bass rod and 5mins later a 10lb+ bass hit the bank (its my avatar) the fish was short very plump and broad accross the shoulders. rig was a 3oz lead cast out 15-20yrds then a pout on a 3/0 viking hook to 6-8" of 15lb amnesia to a swivel and leadclip which was clipped to the mainline and slid down until the pout reached the surface. i then tightened up until the pout worked just under the surface. bait was only about 4-8" off the boulders yet the margins were 8-10ft deep right off the boulders. this was magazine lane in southampton and i just "knew"the session was going to be a cracker when i was sat in bed several hours earlier and the sudden urge to get down to this specific mark took over! Weird eh??
