Good question. It would have to be mackerel. I've probably caught more fish using mackerel than anything else.

Depends where i am. in southampton, it was ragworm or nothing. lug didnt get a rattle yet swap it with a nice rag and bites are all but gauranteed (at magazine lane anyway -southampton mark) yet using rag up on the prestatyn and rhyl beaches and ive never caught a thing so it would be lug all the way, ive not yet had a bite on any other bait just yet. however ive only been fishing the welsh beaches since febuary so not got masses of experience up here yet but ive caught fish on 90% of trips, all on lugworm to date.

Its a fiddly old bait to use, all the shelling of edibles, mixing, rolling into sausages, meshing it in finger bandage then freezing. it bloody well stinks and defrosts in a heartbeat making storage and transportation a bugger involving thermos flasks and all sorts. seems a strange bait but yet it seems to be the new "wonder-bait" lads around whitby and over the northern marks seem to do well on it, yet ive not found anyone using it down our neck of the woods.
