PostSubject: British Record Bass – Zman lures   Tue Jun 23, 2015 10:19 pm

Hi all,

Sorry for the late report but I did promise you all a report with said title a month or two ago.  Wink

May half term I took my family to an area where I grew up, Portsmouth. I am sure many of you will be aware this is also where the British record bass was caught. Where better to go for our first try with Zman lures! Title now explained.  Laughing

Long story short it was to be another week of blanking. The lures looked good in the water but there was little sign of fish about. We also tried various baits and there were plenty of other anglers around but no fish to show between us. On the positive the lures proved just as successful as all baits we saw used.

We had a great week here though. Fab apartment, view right across the harbour to HMS Dolphin.  Plenty of things to do.  A few pics attached. The Victory picture was ready in case we caught anything. Lots to see. Spent best part of 5 days ambling around the Historic Dockyard. We also hovered over to Isle of Wight to walk the pier where the previous British record bass was caught, and went round to Hill Head where a British record smoothhound was caught (don’t know how with all the kite surfers there – probably at night).

One of the pics is quite a meaningful one to me , so just to explain it as it would probably go unnoticed …

This is the old outlet for Portsmouth Power station. The power station was an enormous imposing building which I can remember being demolished around 1980. In the distance you can see HMS Dolphin submarine base where my father was stationed for some of his career. He was out under the sea for much of it though.  Very left is an area known as Haslar Wall. This is the first place I ever recall going sea fishing. Catching a wrasse on a piece of bacon(!) got my fishing buddy John and I hooked on the sport over 30 years ago.

This spot in Portsmouth was the favourite fishing spot of my buddy. He sadly passed away some 10 years ago of old age. He used to be able to pull school bass out from this spot when all around were blanking. The rod in the picture actually was his rod, we brought it with us so he could fish here with us once more. Unfortunately even he blanked this time as well. Hours and hours we spent here years ago.  Thanks for all those happy memories buddy!!  fishing  boat
