| Some days for some reason we get sand sharks (tope) on the west coast, they spend the summer in the harbours and last Thursday they were out in force, I lost 5 hooks to tope of about 20 to 25 lbs, only saw one, but getting them onto the rock (if I wanted them) is hard in rough conditions, meanwhile every one else was pulling in proper fish eg. snapper to 6 lbs, (I did get 5 smaller ones.) If any of you want some tope with lip jewellery, I know the spot! |

| No, we get yellow eye mullet, not real mullet, called sprats here, can grow up to 1lb, but usually only a few ounces, other west coast pests are small silver trevally though they only have soft mouths, they can't half deal to half pilchard baits well wrapped with elastic thread. We have 4 species of cod, but rarely caught here, only one the blue cod is good to eat, found mostly around the south island. |
