| Far too long since the last fishy fest with my "little" brother, I loaded up enough sea gear for two and took the long drive to his place in The Fens ready for a prompt start on the Anglian Coast.Day One. Thursday 11 March 2010
Salthouse, East Anglia (East Anglia - that's abroad innit?)http://www.tournorfolk.co.uk/salthouse.html Bait: Welsh lug, rag, mack and party squid.Over the sea wall and we were quickly fishing the steeply sloping shingle beach patrolled a cast length out by Mr Seal, suggesting there was a fish or two in range. In between pegs unfamiliar pipers check out the tideline and pose for the birdwatchersLooking North (the sea is on the wrong side over there!! )South towards Weyborne where a dredger was doing whatever dredgers do,Pete had never caught a fish off a beach before, but he was soon in with a first cast scorpion.followed by a dabMore scorpions followed, feisty little critters growling at usI'm not admitting who caught the most ( My excuse is the amount of time I spent mentoring him! )Great to be out with bruv, the fish were just a bonusbut we hadn't finished yetDay Two. Friday 12 March 2010
Decoy Lakes, Whittlesey. The Chuckle Brothers seize the day.http://www.whittleseyweb.co.uk/decoy.htm Bait: Sweetcorn, luncheon meat, caster, maggot, pedigree chum mixer, pellets, bucket of groundbait, hemp and more... in fact more groceries than the average supermarket. I put my camouflage gear on and did my best to look like I thought a carp angler should. My camo coat was 3/4 length when I bought it 30 years ago, oddly it's now a bum freezer and a bit tight - odd that.
After umpteen hours ferrying 14 lorry loads of gear to Willow Pool we were ready to begin setting up. The pegs are patrolled by feral mink, woodpigeon clatter through the trees & pheasants call from the fieldsI plan on using my lightest sea rod, a tidewater MPS, allied to a coarse reel and 4lb line on the mullet this Summer and I was keen to see how this set up handled a pumped up carp, bruv was sceptical. This time it was my turn to be first in, three fish later I had to admit that even though it looks spindly to me and it did the job, the MPS is a poker compared to Pete's sensitive feeder rods and it was given up for lent carp gear. Many carp and a bonus chub followed on rod and poleto me,to you.Too many fish to bother photographing, we must have been well on the way to a 100lb of fish overall. He's not admitting who caught the most ( His excuse is the amount of time he spent mentoring me! )Mustn't leave it so long next time! He's promised me a barbel and I've promised him a bass.
